We often have certain behaviours that we connect with smoking. It can be helpful to change these behaviours and start to break them either before quitting, to prepare, or once the quit date comes.

Some examples could be coffee and a smoke, driving, talking on the phone and having a cigarette.

What behaviours have you changed? What did you change them to?

Here is an article if anyone would like to read more on the topic/get some resources.

    Hi Emily,

When I quit smoking, I knew that smokeless mornings would be the most difficult for me. Coffee and cigarettes were my constant companion starting the day. So I ended my relationship with coffee and went to green tea, a completely new beverage for me that had no associations attached. After meals were also a challenge so instead of lighting up, I have a mint.

Wishing everyone a smoke free day!

    Hi Emily,

I used to smoke after every meal and every snack.  The urge was so strong that when I quit, I was actually afraid to eat.

What I did was try to drink a glass of milk afterwards, because to me, milk and smoking just don't go together.  If I didn't have milk, I would drink a huge glass of water, and then do anything I could think of to keep myself distracted.  And in my head I kept up my mantra, "I choose not to smoke.  I CHOOSE not to smoke."  It worked.
