    Hi everyone,

If someone asked you, what do you know for sure about quitting? What would you say?
For me, one thing I know sure is that we are all different and quit differently. You must identify what works best for you and go with that (of course advice from fellow members are very helpful and encouraging). We may find similarities with others but ultimately it's a personal experience!

So if you could share one thing, what would it be? What do you know for sure about quitting?

    Thank you! :)

    Hi Nadia,
Here is what I absolutely know for sure:

It is a damn hard thing to do.
    But it can be done.

That quitting is so much better than smoking.

I just feel better overall. I live my life. I am not a slave to smoking anymore.

The first month you are a smoker trying not to smoke.
Months 2-3 you are adjusting to not smoking. You value your quit and are starting to get used to doing things without smoking.
Somewhere around month 4 or 5 you start to think a bit like a non-smoker. You start to enjoy breathing better and being able to do stuff without huffing and puffing. You don't think about smoking all the time. It just starts to get really better.

My 5 months of being a non-smoker is June 01. I enjoy being able to say that I am a non-smoker now. It really does feel good.

Thank you wimporswim and atp for sharing....
You are absolutely right, it's a hard thing to do and yes, it can be done,
@atp, thank you for your insight with the timeline, it's very helpful especially the transition from smoker to non-smoker mindset.

    Have a great evening!

Not many things I know for sure but after 40 years smoking I do know for sure is that attitude is a huge factor to the success of your quit program.  Can't remember how many times I have quit or tried to quit over the years only to fall back to the old habit.

I wish I could say how or even what made this one work but I can't. I only know for sure that my mind was set, I was quitting....10 weeks on July 1.  It can be done!!!!

    Hi totalquitterlol,

Thanks for sharing! This quit is different because you have the right mindset. You sound determined to continue on this path towards becoming a non-smoker. Congratulations on keeping that mindset strong over the past ten weeks!!!

Efreeman75, I like that: Believe and you will Achieve! It can take some time -- and some practice and persistence -- but anyone can quit. Now, for anyone reading this who doesn't believe in themselves yet: we believe in you!

    Regards,
    Efram

Some living will need to happen. Why am I doubting myself? Self-doubt and insecurities are creeping onto me and I don't know why.
Starting a journey in Couple's therapy today and I don't think I can do it without this bad habit, I'm afraid of relapsing if stress goes up and arguments happened.

My health is my priority why did I accept this extra challenge when I'm not quite solid by myself yet? Why oh why?

    me_n_freedom,

Quitting smoking in and of itself is stressful. You're going through physical and mental withdrawal, and a the same time trying to figure out how to live as a non-smoker. Self doubts when trying to quit are hard and they are a part of the mind's mechanism to keep you addicted.  One thing I learned during my quit was that I didn't need to smoke to deal with stress, or to relax, or to enjoy the moment. Smoking didn't help with any of those things.

Good for you to do couples counselling. My wife and I have done it too and it has been the best thing we have done. Much as quitting smoking, you have to want to do it. If anything, by quitting smoking you are showing you are prepared to change. It becomes a whole lifestyle and attitude improvement.

You can also involve your partner in your quit. Talk to them about what you're feeling, the whole struggle of quitting, cravings, etc. It is amazing what other conversations come up when you open up about your struggles of quitting.

    Hi me_n_freedom,

I'm with atp, while it certainly can be challenging to take on multiple changes at once, it sounds like you are at a transformative stage for yourself and really focused on having a more positive future. Good for you! Hopefully you will gain some more skills in couples therapy that might help you with your quit too.

    Grace
