I had my "last" cigarette over 48 hours ago.. then today I decided to go to the corner store to get supplies for a recipe and bought a pack. I had one, almost cried at how weak I was, then had another which did *nothing* for me. I ran the remaining under water before I threw them away to avoid me digging them out if I get another craving. That was 4 hours ago.
I regret idolizing my initial "last one". Maybe I needed to get the "failure" out of the way and pick myself back up?
Round 2 and this time it's for good :) Hopefully the text support will help. I signed up for it, but haven't received anything yet.
    Good luck all!

The first 2 days were the hardest for me. But I am on day 3 on this round. I’ve been smoking for 22 years. Had 3 - 1 year plus breaks.
Right now, the one thing I am mentally doing, is saying to myself how upset and waste it will feel like if I smoke. I know it’s not a healthy way to retreat from a massive craving, so saying something like ‘ I have worked my butt off for this so far, I’m not giving up, I’ve beat so many cravings’ is kinda helping me if I remember to use more positive language in the thinking. I’ve also ‘ ‘slipped’ so many times over the years that I learned that I always feel awful after, and I end up talking myself into the well, ‘maybe it’s not my time to quit’ mentality. So, I’m slowly learning that it is a very much mental thing, you have to cheerlead for yourself, get good support from others, and find your own way of doing it that is individual and works for you and you only.

Keep at it, and count the triumphs as they come:)

Butfirstcoffee, welcome to our forums! You're on the right track already: picking yourself back up and trying again with added support in place (sometimes it takes a little while to get a text; hopefully it comes soon).

Nina82, welcome as well! Positive language is where it's at! We like to use positive language to reframe "failure" as "learning" instead. Because that's what's really happening each time someone makes a quit attempt. So it's nice to hear that you're learning what works best for you!

And remy9411, thanks for writing. It's great that you want to make some changes. Smokers' Helpline is only set up to help people who use tobacco, so we're not really able to help with marijuana. But some good resources could be CAMH's website: https://www.camh.ca/en/health-info/mental-illness-and-addiction-index/cannabis and Health Canada: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/health-effects/addiction.html. Your healthcare provider might also be happy to help further. Wishing you success and good health!

Slips will happen. It is no big deal. Learn from it and get back on the quit horse.

I past quits I always made the mistake of 'just one'. Last quit I applied NOPE  - Not One Puff Ever.

It is hard. I bought a pack of smokes by mistake one day about 9 months after I quit. Yup, went to pay for gas and was on hold on the phone and absentmindedly bought a pack and actually opened it as I was walking back to my van. Talk about a real 'holy sh*t' moment. I tossed the pack.

It is the value of the quit that kept me going. I did cold turkey and didn't want to go through withdrawal again.

Fight through those cravings, it does get better.

Thank you for this! I am really trying to stay positive but I'm finding myself being very negative. Social distancing is making it especially tough for me since I was planning on keeping super busy during this quit. I've been smoking 20 years with the longest quit being about a year. I'm at that point you mention; maybe it isn't my time to quit... really trying to stay a float on this one though! I will keep trying. Congratulations on quitting! You sound like you've figured it out this time. I'm sure I'll find my way too.

    butfirstcoffee,

You need to break it down to small victories.

With social distancing and all of the disruptions i can understand it is causing stress for you and many others.

One way to look at - quitting smoking now will help in case you do get the virus and can't go out.
Also by not smoking your lung function will improve and help if you do get the virus.

If you are stuck at home take the time to clean-up your place to get rid of any smoking related stuff and clean all the stinky smoke smell.
