I finally decided to quit smoking. Ive been smoking for 35 years now and my breathing is getting worse and worse with every cigarette. My quit day is June 1st and because Im a heavy and long time smoker, Im going to do a combo of pills and Nicoderm. Ive already started smoking on my balcony and delaying cigs as long as possible. I need to do this for myself. For my future.

    Hi Airmaiden,
Welcome to the forum. Its a great place to come to and share experiences, get advice and vent the frustrations that this addiction can cause. You have a month now to prepare yourself for the battle ahead and with the aids you will be well equipped. Everyone here knows and understands what its like so you are not alone.
I quit 149 days ago and have been on here everyday since reading and reading threads, old and new and its such a comfort and a great distraction when the cravings strike. Its not easy so be ready to fight.

    Thanks DublinGuy
Ya Im going to need all the support I can get for sure. I already signed up to CAMH's quitting program and theyre sending me free Nicoderm patches and lozenges. Also, Im talking to my doctor today about maybe going on Champix as well. I've been smoking for so long that I swear I can barely remember a time when I didnt have a cigarette. But Im progressively cutting down. I went from 40 to 20 cigs a day just recently and Im going to continue to cut down as much as possible before my actual quit day. I had heart surgery 2 years ago and I have breathing issues, that I take puffers for daily. So I have to quit. For my health. I also want to be able to do activities like swimming and biking without losing my breath so quickly. Im a little concerned about weight gain as I cant really afford to gain any weight. But Ive decided to take up the piano on a full time basis to keep my hands busy and to lessen the hand to mouth habit. My cutting down has been going great so far and Im actually looking forward to June 1st. But I know its going to be hard. However if it was easy it wouldnt be worth it. Thanks again for your support and Im probably going to be on here every day as well throughout this process. Im going to need the support Im sure. One day at a time : )

That's the spirit Airmaiden. Preparation is the key. Talking to your doctor will help you find the best method. I used Champix in the past and they really do work. But it was almost too easy and two months down the road I was back smoking again. This quit I used the patches.. 10 weeks of them. I still got bad cravings in the early stages but they really helped. Im not sure about using both Champix and the patches together but your doctor will inform you on that one. Don't be too concerned about any weight gain... that seems to be normal and can be dealt with later.

What was key for me this time was Id had enough and I just made up my mind that I had to give them up. I had to let go of them because I was getting sick more often (the Covid scare really kicked in), I was grey in the face and I was broke from feeding the habit living pay cheque to pay cheque and sometimes with no cash at all at the end of the month.

And yes, come here everyday and navigate around the forums. Ive been doing that since Dec and always find new threads I haven't read before. So many helpful people on here that have your best interest at heart and will encourage you and pick you up in any low moments. The swimming and cycling sound like great ideas.. I still have to join the local gym and go swimming after work. That will be a reward at 6 months. The piano sounds like a great way to keep those hands busy.

The first week or 2 will be hard as you adjust to not smoking anymore - its tough breaking the habit and then you will have cravings and urges striking you as well... but once you get a few weeks in, things really do change. Then its just a matter of sticking to your guns and telling the habit to take a hike; that you're not interested anymore.

    Hi airmaiden,

I think it's great that you are preparing for your quit in advance.  That is a very helpful strategy.

I agree with dublinguy.  The posts on this forum are really helpful.  When I quit, I practically lived on this site.  Having support is wonderful and encouraging.  All of us get what you are going through.  I know it's a struggle, but it is definitely worthwhile.  I always say it's a little bit of pain for a lifetime of gain.

    Best of luck.
