Cold turkey. I didn't realise how dependent I'd become of the five minute puff ritual. I was so mean to my family yesterday, I felt like I might as well smoke and be better to them. I even drove out but came back still smoke free. I don't think I can take being so mean to them, but when I lost it yesterday, I didn't have my cigs and I just couldn't stop..the guilt alone is eating me alive. So this evening, I went to the gym for fear of losing it again... Don't know what to do :-(

    Hi mishnims,
Cold turkey isn't for everyone.  I've tried it - more than once - and my temper got way out of whack, plus I was extremely uncomfortable.  Now I use the patch.  Yes, it takes longer to get the nicotine out of your system, but it's a much gentler method.  Maybe NRT is the route for you.

    Good luck!

Thanks turningpoint. I feel better today. I think the gym helped in that it hurts all over and I'm kinda focused on that lol. Do you need a prescription of a patch?

You did the right thing by going to the gym.  Exercise releases endorphins into your blood stream.  My I also suggest vitamin B or there is a vitamin complex for Stress.  You can find it in the drug store.  I know that may sound odd but it does help with your mood. I have to say you are doing great.  Just keep it up, it will get easier.  Don't forget the 3 D's.  Drink water, deep breaths and distract yourself.

    Thanks Chris644

You're the third person to suggest B-vitamins to me today. I think I'll try that! Thanks again

    Hi mishnims,

No, you don't need a prescription for the patch.  Glad you're feeling better today.  It's worth it to hang in there.

    Hi There

    Mishnims

Hang in, you are doing ok, just do something instead, when you are loose Clean the house around, go for a walk, drink water, talk to some one confident about hoe you feel, etc. Distract from the crave, it will go away in few minutes.

    Good Luck!

    Hello mishnims,

Withdrawal can be quite challenging.  So good to hear you are feeling better.  Distraction at the gym is helping by what you have said.  And as others have shared, using a smoking cessation product may be beneficial.  Consulting with a doctor for other therapies is always a good idea, we recommend especially at the onset of a quit.

All the best on your journey, we here to support you.

    Hi mishnims,

I quit cold turkey, too.  Before I did, I mentally told myself that I would not be mean to anyone no matter what I was going through.  And actually, I was somewhat giddy in the beginning.  I just couldn't believe that I was embarking on this incredible journey.

Going to the gym was a great idea, and I think it might be worth it to try the Vitamin B.  If it has helped other people, it may help you.

Breaking free of an addiction is never fun.  You are doing to experience a lot of ups and downs.  But hang in there, because all of it is worth it in the end.  You will be a different, person, and you will be free!
