Tomorrow, I'll be smoke free for 2 weeks, but yesterday I started coughing and getting short of breath, same thing today.

Since I quit, I had no cough or breathing problems, why does it start now ,after 2 weeks?

Maybe it takes a bit longer for my lungs to heal after 50 years of smoking?

That is most likely a pretty good sign that your body is trying to heal itself, by finally starting to try to get rid of all the crap built-up in your lungs. I'm onto week 7 and still get days where I'll cough up some nasty phlegm. But - the smokers cough is now a distant memory!

Keep doing what you're doing with your quit!

    Hi Lucky

    After 50 years   of smoking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course that your lungs are fighting to get rid of the all chemicals from smoking, every coif clear up a bit, specially after a shower, your lungs clear up and you feel much better!
This process take time, if you continuo you might see your Doctor to check it!

Is normally that the lungs clear up after you quit!

Congrats on your two week anniversary, lucky!
Withdrawal can be different for everyone, and can continue on for a while after you've quit.
Coughing & bringing up phlegm is a common withdrawal symptom.
Brieffree & atp have captured what withdrawal is: your body working really hard to get well! Think of this as recovery symptoms, lucky.
You know your body best, so if you have any concerns, let your healthcare professional know how you're feeling. Hope you're feeling better soon, but remember it does take time.
    All the best!
    Sarah
