Hi everyone! It’s day 1 for me! I’ve been a smoker off and on since I was 14. I quit when I was 21 and did really well for 7 years, then picked this rotten habit up again. I’ve quit once more since then, but only for a year.  I’m really hopeful that I can beat this again and beat it for good! I’m tired of feeling like crap all the time and especially tired of hiding this nasty habit from my kids. I want to set a good example for them and make sure I’m around to see grandkids one day. I know this won’t be easy, especially considering my partner smokes, but I will conquer this!
Best of luck to all of you trying to quit as well!! WE CAN DO IT!!!!

Congrats on making the decision to quit.

I'm on Day 7 (quit on New Years). Been a rough patch, but well worth it.

There are some really good posts on this site that are really helpful.

    Thank you :)

I was going to quit New Year’s Day, but with the kids at home I thought I’d be too stressed out to quit lol... Congrats on the first week!

Way to go Mak31, you can do it!  I quit on New Year's Day but I've smoked a few as well.  Not giving up on quitting, but easing in to my quit.  When I take it easy for the first couple of weeks I can usually succeed for a while.  Sending strength your way.

Ginnyj: Congrats on deciding to quit smoking. You won't regret the effort.

I'm a week into my quit and starting to feel a lot better. I went cold turkey this time and it is working for me. For me the first 3 days were the hardest - nicotine withdrawal. I have a good support partner in my wife which helps.

As you can tell from the different posts on this site there are lots of different approaches to quitting. Do what feels right for you. Find your motivation to keep going.

I started a bit of a journal which helped me express my feelings, and I spent a lot of time literally talking to myself.

Looking forward to hearing how your quit is going.

    Hi Folks!

First, a big welcome to ginnyj and mak031; so glad to have you here adding your voices to the mix!

Lots of folks in early January are starting off the year in such a positive way, making those changes for the better, and helping each other along the way!

Mak031, speaking of positive starts, I love how enthusiastic you are. You've beaten this before and you know you can do it again!

Atp, thank you for extending your helping hand, and congrats on your success getting through the first week!

Ocean, nice to hear that you're finding what works for you, easing into things.

And ginnyj, it's normal to feel scared. Change -- especially this change -- can be hard. Hopefully having support can make you feel more relaxed. Please also keep in mind that one-on-one support is available if you'd like to speak with a quit coach: 1-877-513-5333, and that your healthcare provider could also be a good resource.

    Regards,
    Efram

Thank you all for the support :)

I’m just finishing up day 2, still haven’t had a smoke, but I’m using the patch. I didn’t realize how much of a habit it has become for me until today... I ate lunch and then did what I would always do; head out to the garage to have a smoke! Without even thinking about what I was doing I put a smoke in my mouth (cause the hubby left some at home... grrrrr) and picked up the lighter... Luckily I realized what I was doing before I actually lite the smoke! It’s crazy! I just shook my head and said to myself “what are you doing you moron!” Lol.
Anyway, I know it will get better and the habit will fade away. I’m still optimistic and determined to win!!

Hey mak031, that's exactly how I relapsed on prior attempts - keeping smokes around. And yes it is the habit part that leaves you feeling restless not knowing what to do with yourself.

Congrats on getting this far and for your determination to keep your quit.

    Good morning mak031.

Wow, that was a close one!  atp is completely correct - the habitual part of smoking can be one of the most difficult aspects to quit.  You need to find something else to do after lunch besides going to the garage.  Clean up the dishes, scrub the stovetop, change your engine oil - anything to distract yourself.

I'm so glad you caught yourself.  Keep that optimism and determination and you will win.
