    Hello friends,
I've been working on this new quit since October and to make a long story short, I met a quit nurse today at the Ottawa Heart Institute who has given me different NRT suggestions and products.  My quit date is Monday, January 15th.  I'm putting on a Patch this weekend, and will smoke a little as well until Monday, when I go all NRT.  I was so ready to quit in November, and got side-tracked by life events.  So, I feel less mentally prepared, but more physically prepared, if that makes sense.  I'll be lurking here a lot this weekend.  So all the best to you!

    Hi Ocean.

I hope you know that your lurking is very welcome? It is so exciting to see your quit date and that it is coming up soon. You might not be 100 % mentally prepared but it still can be done. You've got the nrt and the support from the institute. You have really set yourself up for success Ocean, it will happen.

And, of course,we are here for you!

    Hi Ocean,

The way I see it, you are doing everything right.  You have done what you could to prepare, and soon your quit day will be here.  To be honest, I don't think that anyone is totally prepared, either physically or mentally.  We just have to take the plunge at some point.

Try not to worry, Ocean.  You will be fine.  And we will all be here for you.  You can do this.  Believe in yourself.  You are a really strong person, and you can beat this addiction.

Enjoy the feeling of taking your life back...I will be learning from you when I quit cause it looks like you will be a few weeks ahead of me! Proud of you for making this important choice of putting down the smoking!!!

Hi Ocean...you can do this.  I'e attempted to quit numerous times before.  Just keep focusing on your goals and reasons for quitting and have at hand lots of distraction techniques to.  Personally I found having essential oils at hand really helpex to keep a fresh clean scent around me.  You just have to find what works for you.  Good luck.

Hey Rodriguez, you're on!  I quit yesterday and I'm loving the mist on top of the Patch.  It;s easier for me on work days because I'm distracted all day, but I survived the after work stretch without hard cravings, and it's usually near impossible.  I did so much prep!  One thing that I did was I stayed on these boards to keep myself engaged.  I knew if I didn't keep it on mind, I would lose my interest.  Tomorrow should typically be harder, so I'll see if I can keep it like it was today.

Hey Ocean...how are you doing with your quit? I am starting my Champix tomorrow and getting quite nervous but also excited as this planning stage has really worked to build a hate on for the cigarettes. I really believe this quit will stick as I’m done with the chains of this sad addiction!! So happy for you and it sounds like you have really done your homework as well!!!

Hey Rodriguez, I'm still going.  I think my NRT is really helping to ease the withrawal so the side effects aren't overwhelming me, so I'm feeling strong in my quit so far.  Also, I quit Monday afternoon instead of Monday morning, who cares what a few hours or days mean in the scheme of things, forever is what I'm after.

I'm very fatigued today, but I stayed up late a few nights and only got 4 hours sleep so I'm feeling like I'm dragging myself.  And I only had 2 sprays of the fast acting nicorette today, but on the step one patch during the awake hours, so that helps.

One thing that I notice is as soon as I pass day one, I get ahead of myself and think 'now wean off the nicotine replacement".  But I have to stop that 'competitive thinking'.  It's not a race, and if I struggle too hard I'll  feel really negative in the weeks to come.  So I have to battle these thoughts and keep dosing my NRT in spite of myself.

Things that are helping is being my own friend and support. Nobody else can do this for me, so I have to be kind to myself.

And not one puff today, this hour, etc ...  I don't think about tomorrow.

    You take care,
    Ocean

    Hi Ocean,

It is great that you have learned how you inadvertently sabotage yourself by thinking you can go off the NRTs at an early stage.  I have always told people here that I see absolutely nothing wrong with using NRTs.  In fact, they have been a lifesaver for many, many people.

One thing that used to really tick me off was that I was told, "Just quit."  Like I could snap my fingers and magically make that happen.  I mean, get real.  So I am really, really happy that we now have sites like this one that take into account all of the difficulties encountered when quitting smoking.  I found the information here really helped me to both prepare for and to cope with all of the challenges I faced when I decided to quit.  And so many people have shared their experiences with NRTs, what worked for them, and what didn't.  And my take is that using NRTs is not a sign of weakness.  It is a sign of strength.  It means you realize how hard it is to quit, and so you get the help you need to first quit, and then to stay quit.  That is what NRTs are made for, and I think it is smart to use them.

So don't worry about that, Ocean.  Keep going on your path to health, and give yourself credit for having the guts to embark on this journey.  You should be really proud of yourself, and I am rooting for you.

    Hi Ocean,
Thanks for sharing how your thinking could sabotage your quit. I have had the same thinking on past quit attempts and is something I will have to watch out for on my next attempt. I have gone back to preparing by cutting back, exercising and reading and writing a lot.
I’m rooting for you and hoping to join you really soon.

Hey Ocean how are you doing? So happy to hear your self awareness in the sabatoge! It is so easy to do...your absolutely right that it is not a race and this is serious business so no need to jump ahead! Stay in today. I hope your proud of yourself.
I started my Champix on Wednesday and I caught my addict brain chirping to me about not starting it this soon, it’s going to ruin my last days of smoking, I should be able to quit without a pill...and on and on it went! Unbelievable how hard it tried to get me to falter on my well thought out plan...so I’m proud I stuck to my plan and started it....during this planning stage I have really come to hate the cigarettes and realize what an addiction it truly is...I will be stubborn through this quit because it’s time to put it down for good!!! Here’s to a healthier version of all of us!!!!!

Hi everyone, I guess I'm a week behind as I wasn't aware that this thread had started more than a week ago. Good to see you still hanging in there Ocean.

    One day at a time.
