I have gone through this process so many times before and I am here to try one more time.  My reason for quitting this time is for health.  My father passed away in 2006 from lung cancer, several people I know have come down with illness’s because of smoke related illness’s from heart problems, breathing problems and cancer itself.

My my problem right now is that I want to quit but I am having problems committing to a quit date.  The problem is the time of year.  It would be easier for me in the winter months but I think I should quit sooner for my health.

    What at do you think?

    Hello Chrissy2,

You are committed to quitting smoking as you have not given up, be very proud of yourself!  People have been known to make some attempts before succeeding in remaining smoke-free.  So you really are that much closer to being non-smoker.  And your strong motivation for your health is going to certainly help you through your journey.  Very sorry to hear about your father and others in your life who have taken ill due to their smoking.  This also has had an influence on your decision to quit smoking.

Around setting your quit date, there never is a perfect time to quit.  Each season can have its triggers.  You sound ready to quit now for your health. Please feel free to share with us what you perceive some challenges in the Fall could be for you.  We could support you to brainstorm ideas to equip you with quit methods + how to distract from the things this season may bring your way. Ultimately this will build your confidence to set a quit date.  Keep in mind that others too have had reservations about setting a date so perhaps some members have their story to share with you.  Also, if it is too hard to set the date, working on a plan to cut back smoking will lead to your smoke-free day.

    Cheering you on!

Thank you for replying to my post Marianne.  I think you are right and if need be cut down smoking first.  I think I’ll try the inhaler.  I have found in the past that it helps a lot.  I’m also going to buy a case of water.  Ice cold water in a bottle also helps, something to hang onto and helps with that hand to mouth habit.  I’ll work away at it and hopefully within a week, I can throw the smokes away forever

    Hi chrissy2,

It's great that you are going to try to quit smoking again.  It is truly the very best thing you could do for your health.

As you cut down, maybe make a note of when you are getting intense cravings.  Then think of things you can do to distract yourself.  Drinking cold water is a good one.  You can also do things that you enjoy, like reading, playing games, or going for a walk.  Do you have any hobbies, or are you interested in starting one?  Personally, I found distraction to be very effective in helping me to cope with cravings.

Make a list of all the reasons why you want to quit, and read it often.  And read as much as you can about the benefits of quitting.  That is also a great motivator.

    Hello Chrissy2,

Good to hear that you have chosen a quit aid that best suits you.  And as you say, drinking water is a great strategy to replace that hand to mouth connection.  Treepeo has shared some really good ways to plan ahead for those cravings.

All the best to you in the upcoming week and look forward to hearing about you are doing.

    Hi chrissy2,

Health is a major reason why I quit smoking too. Knowing that I was wasting away my life with an insidious addiction was a major incentive to quit. My Smokers' Helpline dashboard tells me I have already saved 52 days of life since I quit in March. My lungs are feeling clear and I can enjoy deep breaths of fresh air without coughing. You have all this to look forward to as well. I see you have started to develop a quit plan and that will help you succeed. I wish you every success on your journey to healthy living.
