I finally realized what cigarettes symbolize for me.  They symbolize evil.  So then I had to walk away from them.  For good.  No matter what.

    Hi turningpoint,

For me, my inability to quit smoking was a burden I carried at all times.  I was embarrassed each and every time I lit up.  So when I finally quit, it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders.  And oh, what a relief that was!

    I love this thread!

Thinking about the 'meaning' smoking has to you can really help the perspective about your relationship with it.

    Evil, burden...

    Perhaps inconvenience?

Anyone else have a meaning they have placed on cigarettes?

Treepeo,  I'm glad that the weight has been lifted from you.  I share in that, as well as the sense of relief. I was a smoker for longer than you were.   I consider what I'm doing by quitting smoking to be a "conscious uncoupling".  Now though, it's Friday night and I'm thinking "So now what?"  Now that cigarettes are gone.

    Hello Turningpoint,

How did you spend your Friday night? It's normal to feel lost at first without cigarettes, but remember "No matter what"

    Hello Renee,

I think on Friday night I just went to bed early.  However since then I've kept myself busy, and today I listed  all the enjoyable activities I can do (besides the inevitable housework of course).  I came up with a dozen so far.  From cooking through reading, shopping, journaling, walking, going to a local exercise group, and so forth.  I think I have enough to choose from, at least for now.

Hope everybody is enjoying the holiday weekend.

    Hello turningpoint,

Hope you are having a good holiday as well!

It's great you have a good list of activities you can do that you find enjoyable and did not smoke on Friday! Keeping and busy and distracted by things you like will help you maintain your smoke-free status "no matter what".
