    Heab,

Quitting smoking is hard work what with physical  withdrawal from nicotine and our mind screaming at us not to quit our daily habit. But you know what, it is worth all the short term suffering for a lifetime of benefits.

Maybe the thing to do is write out all the reasons you have for wanting to quit, vs the reason you have for keeping smoking. That was a good motivator for me at the start.

    Hi heab,

I know exactly how you feel, because I used to feel the same way.  I think you just have to tell yourself that you are serious this time and go for it.  Take the plunge and see where it takes you.

Thank you everyone for your support. Tomorrow is my quit date and I am feeling so anxious that I will not follow through. Six months ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. First in 2003- and then this past August it returned. Thankfully it was caught early. I quit after having a double mastectomy in August for 3 months but started smoking again this past November. I have tried to quit so many times since November but only seem to be able to quit for 3/4 days. It seems so insane that I have been diagnosed with cancer again but continue to smoke. I bought nicotine patch's today and feel commited to quitting but more often than not that commitment seems to fade away after a couple of days. My hope is that tomorrow and one day one minute at a time I can be free of smoking and make a serious commitment. I am scared and worried !

    Good evening heab,

Aww, I am sorry to read about your difficulties ~ I couldn't begin to imagine what that's like for you.

When I made my final decision to quit smoking, I called that process - practice. I'd practice not smoking and for me it helped A LOT. Felt like a whole lot of pressure taken off. Oh, I was committed to not smoking but I guess linguistics helped.
Don't underestimate quits... I'd venture to say that as smokers, every time we quit, we are serious.
I was a smoker for 30+ yrs.. I never thought so much about smoking as much as those first months... And so, I sometimes had to say out loud, even as a whisper that 'cravings don't last long, this will go away' and take the day second by second.. minute by minute.
I remember still (feels kinda dark and fuzzy little bit) what day & night before my quit day I felt like and I'm sure I did smoke a crap load that day. I also remember feeling anxious and nervous as well. But this time, something inside felt different.
I started my quit process and my body revolted big time... it cried for that familiar cloud of polutted air. I got super sick for first month a bit, my body recuperating from winning the battle. Finally when I was up and going again, it helped knowing nicotine is out of my body and now, the battle was me against me - no one else.
My quit journey has challenged me in ways I thought I was too lazy to fight for... You never know when that motivation or inspiration comes, so, you're doing the right thing by not quitting to try.
Keep coming back and reading and sharing what your days been like.. It's comforting knowing we're not alone

    nerak
