I would like to introduce myself..My name is Ephraim and have tried quitting before but never really took it seriously until my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in the summer..She just had surgery and is doing great now and I am determined to quit for good this time..I was a chronic alcoholic and got sober in 1995 and that was easy compared to trying to quit smoking...Thanks for the opportunity to become part of this great program and look forward to being smoke free from here on in...

    Hi erbsville,

Thanks for sharing your story with us.  I understand what you mean about trying to quit before but never really taking it seriously.  I used to make some half-hearted attempts to quit, just to "prove" to myself that it was just too darn hard to do but oh well, at least I gave it a shot.  It was all such a crock to appease myself.

This time was different.  This time I meant business, and I have been a non-smoker for about 15 months now.  I decided to quit cold turkey, which was really tough.  However, the wonderful people on this site helped tremendously and pulled me through all the rough patches.

I am so happy to hear that your mother is doing well since her surgery.  I am also glad that this has made you take quitting seriously.  You will find some great advice on this site.  I would really encourage you to read through the materials and do the exercises suggested.  This will help you to prepare for your quit.  And the more prepared you are, the more likely you are to be successful.  And please keep posting.  We will all do what we can to help you through this process.

    Hi Ephraim,

I wish you all the best as you set out on your smoke free journey. I have been smoke free myself for 5 weeks now and enjoy the health benefits. Cigarettes were a constant drain on me physically and financially. I had heart surgery with smoking being a major contributor to the issue. It is good to hear your mother is recovering well from her surgery. These forums have helped me a lot along the way. I hope to hear more from you here as your journey continues.
