I am on my third day and I feel lousy. I have a headache, I can't concentrate and I am craving a ciggy badly. Worst of all I am exhausted. I hope it gets better!

Congrats allie1234, day 3 smoke free!  Sounds like the headache you are having is a withdrawal symptom. The explanation for this is that the body is missing nicotine that of which it is accustomed to, and this creates tension.

So brieffree is right, it's a good idea to take some deep breaths, self-care (shower/bath), and other distractions. You can also do some stretches for your limbs or ask someone to massage your scalp, along with making sure you are staying hydrated with water.

Hope this helps! You can do this!

    Hi allie1234,

I feel your pain.  You are in the middle of hell week, and it ain't pretty.  It's absolutely normal to feel lousy, irritable, spacy, headachy, exhausted.  All of that is caused by withdrawal.  Yikes.

The good news is that those feelings won't last forever.  You just have to hang tough.  I know it's hard, but you have already shown that you are tougher.  Stay strong and fight hard.  You can do this.  You are stronger than your addiction.  Show it whose boss.

Keep trying to distract yourself.  Drink your water, and read about the benefits of quitting over and over.  Try to make the time to do something you really enjoy doing.  It will help to pass the time.  Fight like mad to keep your quit, because it is worth all of the effort.  Not One Puff Ever!

    Welcome allie1234,

I definitely found the early days of my quit extremely hard. The first 3 days were the worst, experiencing a lot of same as you & craving a cigarette steady, by day 4, I slowly started to feel better & it just got better, day after day.

Hang in there & Congrats on entering the Non Smoker Healthy World!

Happy to hear things get better. I am still suffering from headaches (lightheaded) and concentration issues but I am trying to keep busy. I really am trying my best...fingers crossed. Hearing other people's stories really help.

Sorta inline with you...I am just starting day 3.  Last night I am at home and wondering if I am ever going to feel better...then I say to myself...yes you will, this will go away...FIGHT!!!  Then I want to cry becasue I am a bit of a cryer when I am emotional....and feeling sorry for myself.........

I keep saying to myself, this is hell week, it will get better, I just have to not smoke.  It sucks honestly, but I look at my kids and that helps...I try to think of distractions, I feel like my cravings last FOREVER, and then I end up going to sleep on the couch and feel a bit better after that too...I feel like if I give up and I would have to start over...which would suck.  I look at other smokers and be envious as I am like, how come they get to smoke and not feel bad about it...not have this withdrawal hell...then I shake my head and say thats my addiction trying to trick me....it WILL get better, I know it will!!!

I hope you feel better today on your day 4 <3

Day 5 for me and I feel the same - just think of it as one day at a time. A saying I saw and loved. "Don't look at the whole staircase to climb, just one step at a time and you will make it to the top".
Seems to work for me because thinking of the future - nice summer day without a smoke in hand scares me. So I don't even think of it. It will happen and I won't even realize that I'm not smoking. Not smoking will be my new habit - Keep going, we can do it

    Hi everyone,

In terms of withdrawal symptoms, it is absolutely true day 3 is often reported as one of the worst days (as it takes 48-72 hours for nicotine to be processed through your system). This may fall on different days for different people, as everyone is different. It does get better though, and these symptoms will not last forever.

nancyinnes, telling yourself that you would have to go through this process another time is great self-talk to stay motivated in quitting.

pone it is absolutely true: sometimes we need to take it one day at a time. It is a lifestyle change and you will be able to keep going and form new routines!

Keep going, you will be happy you did!
