I had my last cigarette July 31 at 7:30pm. I’ve been seeing a guy for 5 months and he’s quitting too. He had his last July 30. He took up vaping saying he’s just going to use it to get over the hump. Honestly, I’m worried he will never give it up and just switched one addiction for another. It seems to be helping him for now which is great. He’s better off than I am getting through this. I’m proud of him for how well he’s doing.

Me on the other hand...while I smoked less years than he did, I smoked a lot more than he did. The withdrawal is absolutely awful. I’ve had nausea, headache, hot flashes, full body tingling and my anxiety has skyrocketed since I stopped. I’ve been using the Nicorette inhaler to get through but its not helping much. I’m trying so hard not to leave my house and go try and bum just one off someone. I really don’t think I can do this but I already told my kids that I am so kinda have to keep up with it.

I never set a quit date. My guy text me randomly that it was day 1 for him. Never gave any indication he was thinking about it. And I offered support and encouragement for him, jumped on his bandwagon and finished my pack a few hours later and that was that. Threw out my other 5 packs.

Any other suggestions how I beat this? I’m dying for one right now.

    Hi there

I just read your post. I am sure is hard, I been there couple of years ago, now I am free, it took me a long time, quit, sleeps etc.., but always went back to the quit Zone!

It's ok, all that you feel is part of the Quit!

You need to be Strong, you deserve to be free! You are not alone!
    .
    Drink Water instead
    Distract yourself
    Go for a walk
do something easy around the hose to get rid of the crave

Make a plan what to do instead of smoking! The craves will be much easy to handle!

All the best, you can do this!

Hello anberlincanucks - happy day #4 of your quit & thank you so much for your honest post.
While withdrawal can be annoying, and frustrating, and make you wanna scream! ...its a regular part of the quitting process. While you are having a tough time of it, look at you! You made it to day #4! Way to go. Do you have plans this weekend? Can you get some extra rest and/or make some time for self-care? Its super important and, well, you deserve it!
Brieffree shared what we call the 4Ds (thank you, Brieffree!). Its a great way to remember some quick tips while experiencing a craving. Any distractions that work well for you? Something that keeps your hands and/or mind off smoking?
How often are you using the inhaler? It is meant to be used generously, especially at the beginning of your quit.
And while its fantastic that you and your partner are quitting together - you can be each other's cheer squad! - remember that your quits will probably be two different experiences...and thats ok! There is no one way, or "right way" to quit. So continue to be there for each other, because you're both doing it, day by day.
    All the best
    -Sarah
P.S. Do call the Smokers Helpline if you want to speak to one of our quit coaches at 1-877-513-5333...they will be there tomorrow EST from 9am-5pm, closed Monday for the Civic Holiday.

Have a great long, smoke-free, weekend everyone!

    Hi anberlincanucks,

Congratulations on going smoke free! It is a wonderful feeling to be rid of that all consuming habit and I know you will come to enjoy the freedom. Exercise can be a great outlet for the stresses of quitting. Going for long walks has helped me a lot in staying smoke free. Instead of trying to bum a cigarette you could tell them proudly that you have quit smoking.

Wishing you another smoke free day.

I'm on day 4 and the cravings are the worst yet.  I am just telling myself it will pass, it will pass, you can do this.  I have a lot of people relying on me for this quit as well, so I have to do it.  We can do it.  It is just going to SUCK so major right now.  I don't know when it gets better but it is coming.  It is coming.  Just tell yourself, the getting better is coming.  Maybe not this second, but next second.  Just keep holding out.  I am chewing the gum so frantically that my jaws hurt and it is 10:48am.  You CAN DO IT!!!!

    hi beacher1967,

Sorry to hear your cravings are tough. Your post shines with your determination. Keep reminding yourself (as you are) why you are doing this. You are right, it definitely does get better! Day 3 or 4 can be a tough time, and mornings can be especially difficult for most people.

To ensure you are getting the full benefit of the nicotine gum, please park the product for the most time it is in your mouth, between your gum and cheek. This allows the nicotine to absorb into your blood stream, in order to ease the cravings.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call a quit coach at 1-877-513-5333 for more information.

    Best,

    Jenna Lee
