    Hi Everyone
I've set a quit date. It's Aug .14th or sooner if I use up all my cigarettes(10 pks left)
I know this will not be easy but it is my time .I've smoked for too many years already so now it's time to stop and allow my body to repair itself before it's too late .

    Hi marion777,

You have made the right decision.  It is time to quit.  And you have come to the right place for support.  There is a lot of good info on this site.  Try to read through some of the suggestions, because that will help you to prepare for your quit.  The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to be successful in your quit.

You're right, marion777, it's going to be hard to quit.  But there are things you can do to help.  You can delay having a cig.  You can distract yourself so that you don't dwell on the cravings.  You can drink lots of water which will help to remove the toxins from your body.  And you can write a list of all the reasons why you want to quit and keep it somewhere where you can read it when you need to.

Do you plan to use any NRts such as the patch, or Champix?  If so, you might want to read some of the posts here from people who have used them.  The nice thing is that these days, we have products to help us quit.  And if we choose to do it cold turkey, there are sites like this one to help us get through it without NRTs.

I remember all too well when I was told, "Just quit", like it was just that easy, no problem.  Well, what a farce.  Not only was that unhelpful, but those same people also made me feel bad about myself, which actually made me want to smoke more.  Thankfully, things are changing, and that is what this site is all about.

I hope you keep in touch and keep posting, because we will all try to help.  We are all fighting the same addiction, and together, we will be triumphant.  I truly believe that.

    Welcome to Smoker's Helpline!

Hi Everyone. Thank you for your encouraging words! Well, today is Saturday and my quit date has been pushed up to Monday since I'll be out of cigarrettes . At this point I'm feeling anxious. I've decided not to buy any nicorette gum and just quit. It takes 3 days for the nicotine to be out of my system the rest is all psychological and behavioural. I've picked a good time where I'm not working and can lock myself in my place and deal with this . I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Sunday night I'll go to be and when I wake up Monday morning my new smoke life will start I'll keep checking in here and even call the smokers help line if need be .Does anyone have any advice? I've smoked for a very long time .Thank you

    marion777,

It sounds like you are so well prepared for next week! You have set a reasonable quit date where you can do what you need to for those few days, made a quit plan, you have support from us here on the website and phone... so many strengths!

eagerquit that is great advice - to make our environment smoke-free too. There's more than just the psychological and physical.

Some people also struggle with social (e.g. other smokers), and habitual (e.g. after meals), aspects of quitting. Are there any other triggers to identify and problem solve for? Does anyone else have insight into this?

brieffree also touched on a good point - review your reasons for quitting and benefits of quitting such as saving money to keep up your motivation.

    All the best on Monday!

    Jenna Lee
