today i started over again smoked since christmas eve. my slips are due to my emotional well being. stress for me is hard to deal with, not that smoking helps it just makes me feel worse.my anxiety got high and i could not get comfortable with smoking. i enjoyed my quit since november i had a few rough  patches . i felt better about the fact of being a non smoker. i called in shl today to talk about it. i got some good ideas to use in times of stress new ideas come accross to me to be  very positive and add hope to being able to get over these humps. so here i go again feeling good about putting down the cigarette i dont want to give up.

    Hi cec57,

You know what they say - if at first you don't succeed, try and try again.  I applaud you for giving it another shot.  We've all had lots and lots of slips over the years.  There's way more to quitting than most people recognize.  The really great thing is that you are motivated to quit, and that you keep trying.  And you have some really good insight as to what triggers you to slip.  In your case, it seems that your biggest trigger is stress.  So it looks like you will have to figure out other ways of dealing with the beast.

It used to be that I would meet my work friends at the same times each day to go outside to have a smoke.  But when I was really stressed, I would call my closest friend and she would always make the effort to go down with me even if it was outside of our regular meeting time.  So when I made the decision to quit, I thought, "What the heck am I going to do now?"

I learned to go and make a coffee, or go to the restroom.  In either the kitchen or the bathroom, I would inevitably run into other friends of mine at work.  And we would chat for a minute of two.  And I would remind myself that they were non-smokers, and that they had stress but they coped without smoking, so I knew I could, too.  I would take a deep breath, try to have a laugh, and carry on.  And although at first it was difficult, it got easier a lot sooner than I thought it would. And I kept telling myself that I could do it.  I really believe in the power of positive thinking.

Hang in there, cec57.  I believe in you, and you are going to make your quit happen!

    Hi cec57,

A positive attitude towards quitting helps a lot. Write down the benefits you would like to achieve as a non-smoker. It will give you something to work towards. And think of some rewards you would like to have with the money you save when you hit certain milestones.

    Wishing you every success.

Hi cec57, and a Happy New Year to you.

    How are you doing?

The holiday season can be very stressful.  But you haven't given up.  I think we can all relate to smoking due to stress.  It is difficult to believe at first, but after a while you do realize that smoking does not relieve stress but rather adds to it.  Myself, I discovered exercising as an amazing way to tackle stress.  It not only got rid of stress, but totally busted cravings and I got in better shape and lost weight.  Mind and body were finally balanced - although my wife still thinks my mind could use a little fine tuning, lol!

cec57 - You were right to be honest.  Lying, especially to ourselves, is never the answer.  I wish you all the success in the world.
