Hello everyone!! I've been on the road to completely quit smoking for a month. I was a pack a day smoker for over 20yrs. Last October I lost my grandfather to lung cancer and then at the end of February my mom was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer. She was unable to get treatment and passed away 5 months ago today. I didn't have time to wrap my head around the fact she had cancer. And now, I am still in shock that she is gone. I have a 7yr old son. I don't want him to go through what I am going through. I am enrolled in a smoking cessation program. Had my second appointment today. I've gone from smoking a pack a day to occasionally having a cigarette. I have my slips, but am working hard at getting through it. I'm currently on 2 patches a day (level 1 and 3 at the same time) and today I got the inhaler. I'm ready to start living my life, not just for me, but for my son as well!!!

    Hi formom,

So sorry to hear about your losses. Sometimes it takes a dark cloud's silver lining to get us to push through a quit.

A huge congratulations to you on your progress. Keep up the great attitude you have about those slips; they are not undermining your success. You have amazing strengths too: resources (quit smoking programs, inhaler, patch) and motivation (your son and mother).

Looking forward to hearing about your further feats.

    Best,

    Jenna Lee

Hi foremom, I think that this is one of my greatest blessings, that is that I am cancer free, congratulations on your quit, I like your persistence despite the fact that you occasionally slip, hell we all do, I was 8 years smokefree when I started smoking again, it doesn't matter to me how many times that you slip, we will always be here to pick you up and dust you off, just remember because you slip doesnt mean your a failure, you only fail when you stop trying

    Hi formom,

I am sorry that you lost your grandfather and your mother.  I, too, have lost loved ones because they got sick from smoking.  If ever there was a wake-up call, it's losing someone you love.

It sounds like you are doing really well.  Try not to be too discouraged when you slip occasionally.  The important thing is that you are trying, and will continue to try until you are a non-smoker.  The only time we lose is when we quit trying to quit.

You should be proud of yourself for joining a smoking cessation program, and for using the patch and inhaler.  All of those things will help you to be successful in your quit.

Keep posting, because we are all here for you.  And remember, you can do this.  Believe in yourself.

Hi formom, you are inspiring!!!  Sorry for your loss, I understand that as well.  When my mother died of lung cancer I said I would quit, but I did not.  Then later as my dad died I didn't know how to cope so I reached for the old reliable cigarette.  Its been six years since my dad died and I am ready to give quitting a shot.  thank you for the inspiration that you gave me without knowing this. Good luck to you
