Been a smoker for around 8 years, just finished the first smoke free 24 hours. and i cannot believe its this hard, i wanna smoke every two minutes, its all i can think about, i never thought i was this weak. i do want to push on though, i am breaking  into spontaneous screaming into the pillow episodes or i just start doing push ups for no reason. i wish there was a way to skip this first part of the quitting process

    Maher91,

It does take so much strength to push yourself through all of this. If you can keep on, you will get to an easier part of the quitting process.

We really do understand and can feel for what you are going through right now.

Drink water, take deep breaths, distract yourself as much as you can and tell yourself "I can do this!" and it will pass. It really does.

    Hang on Maher91!

    Hi maher91,

I get it, and feel your pain.  The beginning of the quit process is absolute hell on so many levels.  Ugh.  I wish it were easy, but it isn't, plain and simple.  You just have to grit your teeth and bear it.

As Lillian said, drink lots of water, and do what you can to distract yourself.  Think of all of the reasons why you want to quit.  Fight like mad to hang on.  Scream, cry, hit your pillow, commiserate with a friend.  Do whatever you have to do to stay smoke free.  You are strong enough to do this.  Believe in yourself, and refuse to give in.  Don't let your addiction defeat you.    Kick this addiction to the curb.  You don't need it.

    Hi maher91,

Congrats on your 72 hours!   It is not only much, IT IS AMAZING!  Give yourself some credit, maher91.  Quitting is hard, but you are kicking butt!

Keep fighting hard.  Buy another 20 pencils at Dollarama and have at it.  Buy another water bottle, and this time try not to crush it in frustration!  Drink so much water you will feel too lethargic to smoke!  Keep yourself so busy that you can't wait to go to bed.  Cuz when you sleep, you don't crave, and the days pass quicker.  (Yeah, I learned a thing or two when I was trying to quit.)

Hang in there, maher91.  You can do this.  You are stronger than your addiction!  Believe in yourself.

    Hey maher91

Way to go!  you are doing this!  I quit 6 days ago and I haven't been counting the hours, but I know how hard it is!  I've been a smoker for 35 years and it took me one year of getting prepared before I finally was able to quit.
the physical withdrawal symptoms have been hard this week - constant headache and sleeplessness, and I know what you mean by just wishing you could skip this part of the process.  I have wished that a lot this week, too.
Drinking lots of water is helping, and chewing nicotine gum to help with the cravings and withdrawal has been a life line, I don't know if I would have made it this far without NRT.
I am focusing on the freedom I am enjoying so far - I am not a slave to the habit, my body is starting to heal, my sense of smell is so much better.

Keep it up -  one minute, one hour, one day at a time!
