February 7 was day one of putting myself first. I gave up smoking and had a successful day. When my coworkers went out for a smoke  I stayed in and played with a fidget spinner and did some deep breathing. When they came back I found the smell of cigarettes overpowering so I munched on carrots and ate licorice candy.

Way to go dabee on a successful Day Won.  It sounds like you handled your coworkers perfectly.  And I love hearing new distraction ideas.  Fidget spinner - so obvious - and yet never crossed my mind before.

Keep at it - you won't be disappointed.

Hi Dabee, good for you on your decision to quit smoking. The way I see it is, we can be successful if we are willing to do the work that is necessary. And using distractions to get you through difficult times is so important, I hung on to using the 4 Ds, and yes I also have practiced the deep breathing often, and it works!! Glad you have joined the helpline, and keep posting, as we are all here to help and learn from each other. Congrats to you !!  -m

    Hi dabee,

Way to go on making it through your first day!  And kudos to you for not joining your friends when they went out to smoke.  When I watched my friends go out without me, I used to tell myself that I was doing something amazing and that I wished my friends had the strength to join me.  Well, two years later, they are still smoking and I am a non-smoker.  And I wouldn't change places with them for all the world.

    dabee,

What a difficult situation. You handled it lovely. Did what you had to do and got through. In fact, you did even better because it was tough and you still did it!

Thanks to everyone for sharing your tips for distraction.
