Spoke with one of the coaches yesterday and talked about a plan.  Too many times I've just said that's it and tried to quit.  That, obviously, hasn't worked.  So I'm planning this time with a new quit date of September 16 using the Nicoderm puffer to cut down.  I find it works if I make a point of using it.  I've been reading all your posts and they are really helpful to keep me committed.  Thanks for that!

    Hi fedup,

We are so glad to hear that you have set a new quit date – September 16th. You seems well prepared for your quit day and had a great plan and tools - a nicotine inhaler as you cut down. Congratulations for all your hard work you’ve done to reach this day! You are on your way to a healthier lifestyle and your decision to quit will bring positive changes in your life.

Know that you are not alone in your quit journey like smitty said. We are all here for you and we want to see you succeed. Come by anytime with questions or concerns or just to let us know how you are doing.

Fedud, with this great motivation and commitment, you can do it!

Best wishes and good luck on your quit journey!

    Hi fedup,

It's great that you set a quit date.  Now you have a goal to work towards.  Try reading some of the info on this site.  It will help you to prepare for your quit, and the more prepared you are, the more likely you are to succeed.

And don't worry.  You're not alone.  We have all tried to quit numerous times.  But each time we try, we learn something.  Try to take note of things that act as a trigger for you, and then come up with things you can do to distract yourself.  And keep using that puffer.  I say anything that makes quitting a bit easier is worth using!

fedup - welcome back to the team!

While immensely helpful, all the puffers, NRT's, books, quit aids, etc. are nothing compared to our willpower and determination, something I can tell you have in abundance.

fedup is a good name because I think that's the place you need to be at to really want to quit and succeed.  The last time I quit and was on this site I did it cold turkey.  The withdrawals were something else and I purposely started at a time when I wasn't working a lot and no one was in the office so I could work from home.  But cigarettes looked so appealing, even after the worst of the withdrawals had subsided.  I refused to buy a pack but began approaching people with a loonie in my hand and bumming one dart at a time (I would never approach random strangers otherwise).  I would have the first puff, get that 5-10 second buzz, then be so disgusted with the rest of the cigarette I would throw it away and say I'll never do that again.  But I started making it a daily mission and continued before having a full relapse.  I reflect now and realize how powerful the lizard brain is and how it can so severely convolute our decisions and lead us far away from what will make us really happy and toward what will ultimately destroy us.  I have also decided that this time I will be stepping down using the patches and expect that there will be withdrawals when I'm off them but think I'll be more prepared physically and mentally to never touch them again.  Instead of a train running into a wall at full speed it will be more like a train braking before the hitting the wall...less damage and more likely to be able to keep going.

    Best of luck to you.

Thanks so much for sharing.  It is really helpful.  A very close friend of mine passed away last week (not from smoking) so it was just too stressful to take on non-smoking.  It did however emphasize how important each and every day is and I want to live my best life without shame and cigarettes.  Again, thanks.

My quit date is in two days,
I am a little nervous, but with support and using Champix, I feel more confident that I can actually do this.
I am going cold turkey, No NRTs, just the Champix.
I am not looking forward to the withdrawals and I am aware that the first few weeks will be the hardest.
Wish me luck for September 15 as this will be my first day. I can use all the support I can get because I tried doing this three times before without success.

I made it two days only, I started again today. My cat is having surgery on Monday and I had to quit my volunteer job yesterday. I have been using all my distractions, using my candies, gum etc, but even though I am doing these, my mind is focused on having a cigarette, so I have changed my quit day again, up to next Tuesday, Se[tember 25th. The day after my cat's surgery.
I apologize because I know everyone is trying to support me, I have fallen for now but I'll get back up on Tuesday.

    Good morning,

I'm reading this thread for the first time today and it's heartening to see people extending their helping hands and encouragement.

Good Buddy -- nice work in setting a new quit date! Your persistence will pay off!

Efreeman, thanks for the perspective -- slips happen, they are part of the learning process, and every quit attempt will bring someone one step closer to overall success. Quitting two days means a lot of cigarettes not smoked, and many cravings successfully negotiated without a cigarette.

Fedup -- living the best life without cigarettes and without shame is something to strive for, for sure.

Cuui, I like how you describe those decisions to smoke as coming from the "lizard brain"! Hopefully the part of us that's more human can keep that lizard brain at bay and allow for more intelligent choices!

Please keep the faith and keep us posted on your progress!

    Regards,
    Efram

Sorry efram, I am going through too much right now that I am not even setting a quit date.
I apologize to all who have given me support, but don't give up on me, there will be a next quit date, I just don't know when.
