    Good morning,

While I am not new to smoker's helpline, I am new again as of today.  My new quit date is today. I keep relapsing.  I don't smoke very much, but even a little is too much and it has to stop.  I want to renew my commitment to making this work for good this time.  I've had enough of hating myself over this.

    Thank you,

    Margie55

Hi Margie, Welcome back!  I'm at 70 something days, or 11 weeks now.  You were here when I quit.  The secret is to not fall apart if you have a slip.  I always relapsed after a slip, and this time I've had 4 cigarettes in all of these days, and not one relapse.  In the meantime, I've not smoked 1,775 cigarettes since Jan. 15th.  I had a panic moment the last slip because the smoke felt so thick and scary and truly horrifying.  I enjoyed the nicotine calm, but can leave the smoke alone now.  I'm still using a 21mg. Patch and it's been a lifesaver.  I'll probably be on this patch for another month before I try and wean down.  I'm enjoying easy days now, so can you.

    Ocean and brieffree,

Thank you for your replies and support.  I'm on day 2 and this morning I didn't even have a craving! What a miracle!  I am chewing cinnamon nicorette gum (it has to be cinnamon! :) and that helps.  I just need to stay committed to this.  I find just logging on to this site and talking about it really helps.  Then I am making a commitment to all of you as well.  It's harder to cheat and lie to myself when I have committed to follow through with my quit.

    Hi margie55!

    You can do it!
It might be helpful to do the daily pledge?
I am glad you are back here and posting whether it is the pledge or an update.
Lovely that you are back on track, keep us posted,
    Lillian

    Hi Margie 55!

Welcome back. I too find chewing NRT gum helps. My flavor is ice mint. As time has gone on, I find I don't need much of that anymore. I am now at 21 days smoke free and reach more for Excel spearmint as a non-nicotine replacement. My guilty pleasure has become bags of little candies from the dollar store. I may yet have to join a group to get off those :) I have found considerable peace with my decision to quit and look forward to getting into a bucket list of rewards I set up for quitting milestones.

    Good morning margie55

Celebrate each and every day smoke free -  I understand what an accomplishment that it!  I have quit since March 5 - I haven't counted how many days that is - between 3 and 4 weeks!  and I am amazed!

I have quit many many times in the 35 years that I have smoked.  Slipped and relapsed.  Last night, I dreamed that I smoked - 2 cigarettes.  That is a new experience since I quit this last time - dreaming about smoking.  I remember thinking in my dream - 'oops - you don't smoke anymore' and thinking about it more as a mistake or misstep than a going back to the old habit again.

I still chew Nicorette gum and take some nicotine lozenges, although it seems to be less each day.  I haven't had many days of really strong cravings, but there have been some surprising days when I really want to smoke, or dream about it - seemingly out of the blue!  But then I think about it - I smoked for a really really long time!  35 years - and so it's only natural that my body and my brain will remember and want that sensation, that habit, that feeling.  But I am enjoying my freedom, my savings, my energy, my health......
Keep going Margie55 - you can do it!

Day 4 and all is well. I craved this morning but i got through it. I think it's anxiety related. My anxiety is treated and dealt with as best as I can but it is still an issue for sure. Have a great day everyone.

    Hi Margie,
Yes, I get tripped up by moods too.  Especially boredom and irritability.  But these are side effects of quitting (and living!), so just being able to live with it are key.  I am less and less anxious, bored and irritable now, so it does improve.

    Hello margie55,

I can totally relate to hating myself - I felt inadequate, I like a loser who was going to die with a cigarette in my mouth! no matter how much I wanted to quit. The addiction is cunning and patient... and now,  all in my head!
We all have 1 thing in common - we all have a process we went through to start quitting... I find a comfort knowing we often have a lot more in common. I have many cheerleaders when I post in here,  and I want to pay it forward. Keep sharing  your journey /story and look for us cheerleaders.
    Congrats on day 4 👏
