    Hi all,
I quit on Thursday, used nrt for the day and did okay but by Friday afternoon was feeling very cranky.  I was out with friends and ended up bumming a couple of smokes.  Thought I'd just start over on Saturday.  By Saturday afternoon I was soooo depressed, crying uncontrollably and rationalized to myself that I didn't care how bad my health was and that the stress of quitting was worse than continuing so I went out and bought a pack.  The crying has stopped, I still feel somewhat depressed (but have been for a few months due to health issues and missing my dog who died last year) but not as forlorn as yesterday.  I've only had 4 yesterday and today.  Would love to find the strength to toss the rest of the pack and start again tomorrow.  Why do I feel depressed and angry?  I should be happy about this decision?  How can I deal with those feelings better?  I'm hoping to get some tips and support here.  What I really need Is accountability but unfortunately I live alone and work from home so it's too easy to rationalize my way back into smoking.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts.  Congrats to everyone who has made it through the first few days, I think if I could get through a week I'd be in great shape and motivated to stay quit.

    Hello theboz,

The beginning of a quit is rough for most people.  Mild depression and anger can be withdrawal symptoms.  Sorry to hear all you are going through with your health and the passing of your dog.  It makes sense that your feelings would be intensified when you quit.  Having support is essential.  So happy you have found our community.  People here are the best!  We also strongly recommend talking to your healthcare professionals to let them know that you have quit smoking if you haven't as of yet, explaining your symptoms to them.  If there is something they can offer in remedy and other supports, you don't want to lose out on that.

Keep us posted with your progress and feel free to call us at 1-877-513-5333 to have a one-on-one chat with quit coaches.  Sign up for inspirational emails and text if your in Ontario.

Have a good restful week ahead, doing all the things that make you feel good.

    Marianne

    Hi theboz,

We sometimes think of quitting smoking like losing our best friend.  But the truth is, smoking is not our friend, it is our enemy.  It's just that we're so used to smoking at all times, and for all reasons, that we are lost without it.  We are addicted.  So it's no wonder our emotions fluctuate so much when we quit.  Our bodies don't know what to do with themselves.

I know the start of a quit is really horrible.  But if you can hang on, things will get better for you.

The most important thing is that you keep trying.  Think of every slip as a learning opportunity.  And remember, you can quit.  You really can.  Believe in yourself.
