I know many people set quit dates for the New Year. It's been just over a week now and I wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing?

I hope all is going well. But I know it can be hard. Sometimes slips can happen and it can be a common part of quitting smoking. If this is happening, please remember that a slip does not mean the end of your quit. It can actually be a good learning experience. Ask yourself "what triggered you to smoke", "where were you?", "who were you with?", and "what can you do to avoid this if it happens again?".

Don't be too hard on yourself and don't lose sight of your goal. You made the decision to quit for a reason.

If you need any support planning you always have the website or can speak with a Quit Coach at Smokers' Helpline - 1-877-513-5333.

I slipped tonight. I was angry for most of the day and I couldn’t shake it. I smoked a cigarette. It didn’t even satisfy me, it tasted bad, made me dizzy and my throat burned plus the smell grossed me out but I couldn’t control myself. I have been previously smoke free since January 1st of this year. I’m trying to get healthy because I plan on having a baby soon. I just can’t control my anger which leads to craving a cigarette since that was my go to for any stress or anxiety.

And just like that she got up on the horse again, feeling strong.  I felt really sad after a slip yesterday.  This morning at work I was telling my colleages about it (they had been previously giggling at my 'backward' day yesterday at work).  And these non-smking folks had seen the recent TV commercials and told me about them excitedly.  They're the ones where they say you failed  once, you failed twice, you failed ..... but practice makes perfect or something, keep trying.  They really lifted my spirits and made me feel understood.  I had a great day, and yes, craving at the exact same time today, and took deep monster breaths and drank hot drinks instead.

    Hi Emily

I am free for a wile ago, I am still craving, not too much. Still using Nrt. I manage well the craves, but lately, I had a couple that was strong as I never quit!

Is just life, Family or specific Situation, all manageable! Not ever a Puff!

    One day at the time!

    Enjoy Smoke free Life!

    Good Evening brieffree,

Great to hear that you are still smoke-free!

As you said, one day at a time!

What have been your favourite or go-to strategies for dealing with cravings?

I quit on Thursday, slipped on Friday evening then completely fell yesterday.  I was feeling so angry, frustrated and depressed, couldn't stop crying.  I'm not crying anymore but am not happy with myself and need to start over again.  Why do we feel angry?  What can we do when we feel like this without slipping?

    Hello theboz,

Anger and irritability can be real challenging withdrawals.  Also, if you turn to smoking when you are are angry, it would just be more heightened now as you don't have that release.  This is what shmeegs03 shared.  The key is to find something else to do or focus on when the cravings are there and strong.

Anything you enjoy doing that calms you and gives you balance?  Ocean shared some distractions as deep breaths and hot drinks.

Don't lose hope, it is hard yet not impossible.  You will get through this, keep believing and looking for various strategies.

    Marianne
