Had a big slip over last 2 days! Stressed because of an upcoming medical procedure and then relief when it was all over. So Day 17 & 18 I totally screwed up! Am going to get back on track now! I will not give up on giving up! Has anyone else experienced a big slip like this? How do I stop beating myself up over this? I need to move forward with confidence but not feeling good about myself right now....

    Hi beth77,

I didn't even make it 2 days before I slipped so I get it.  For me at that time, it wasn't stress, it was intense cravings and pain in my lungs, wanting a cigarette.  It hurt like hell.

You know what, beth77?  We're all human, and things get to us.  All we can do is the best we can do at the time.  Okay, you were feeling a lot of stress and you slipped.  So what?  It happens.  There is no reason at all why you should beat yourself up for it.  You are doing your best.  Sometimes it's really hard to keep it together.

Please don't be so hard on yourself.  You didn't commit a capital crime or anything.  This addiction is really hard to beat, and it tempts us at every turn.  It may trip us up, but as long as we get back on our feet, we will be okay.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward, beth.  You were doing great, and you will continue to do great.  Just carry on.  We're all in this together.  None of us are perfect, none of us know how to do this the right way.  I don't think there is such a thing as the "right" way in any event.  We just have to figure out what will work for us as individuals.

Remember, you are stronger than your addiction.  And you deserve to live a smoke free life.  Always keep trying, always keep fighting!  We are all here to support you.  Keep the quit!

    Hi Beth,

Thanks for sharing this.  Sometimes when we slip, it just wears us out and down we go but that didn't happen for you. Slips are common, they are a part of the quit process. Sometimes they are little learning sessions, for eg, okay now I know I need to find options for coping with stress... Sometimes they are just the old habit taking over. Focus on learning what you can but don't dwell on this blip. These are a common part of the process and challenge any thought that says otherwise!

This is a "work in progress"!

It takes strength, determination and persistence to succeed at quitting and it is pretty obvious you've got all of those!

Hi Beth, I'm learning to not panic so much over slips, but it's still so anxiety ridden.  I try and try and for most of the horrible episodes I succeed.  But yes, I've slipped 3 times and so far, just very minor but very emotional.  I didn't have any trouble continuiing in my quit, so let me be a beacon of hope for you, lol!  My history was relapsing over slips, but not this time.  I haven't relapsed and I'm on week 10, with 3 slips.

I was the same in the past- if I had a slip I immediately gave up and relapsed. It has really helped reading this forum and seeing this referred to as slips instead of failures as I then don’t give up. I don’t start all over and say I’m 3 days smoke free- I say to myself I’m 3 weeks smoke free with 1 slip. That way I keep the quit! And what is it about Day 17?  It seems there have been a few slips on that day! Thanks for checking in Ocean- I have read your other post and you are definitely an inspiration!

    Hi All,

Today is day 17 smoke free for me. as always, the first thing for me this morning was to go to the forum "The day to day" and take the pledge to stay smoke free today and tomorrow too. When I have an occasional craving I do the 4 Ds: Delay, Deep breath, Drink water, Do something to take your mind off smoking. It really helps. Today I am rewarding myself with a shopping trip at the mall.
