    Hi,
I set my quit date for Wednesday. I have to do this as I am having major surgery at the end of August. I have tried a few times in the past but, I think I'm ready to quit for good. I am nervous about doing this but know it needs to be done for my health.

Hello susanm, we all have our reason for quitting, I too was facing majpr surgery and my doctor insisted that I quit, back in December of last year I developed flesh eating bacteria in my left leg, 4 years prior I had a joint replacement in my left knee and needed major surgery to save my leg, the knee joint that I got was taken out and for the next 16 weeks I was in the hospital on intervenious antibiotics to get the infection under control, my leg was saved but it left some awful scars, three month I went with no knee, as my surgery approached I made a decision that I had to quit smoking, I have been part of smoker helpline of a long time, but still manage to go back to smoking, this time when I quit I knew that I couldn't do it on my own, so I went to my family doctor and he put me in touch with a quit coach, she provided for me every thing that I needed to have a successful quit, they provided for me patches and spray to help me though the tough times, am now going on 3 months smoke free, and I still have my leg, by my first month, one day I realized it had been 2 weeks since I last used the patch or spray, I said all of that to say this, go to your doctor, patches, especially the first step are extremely expensiveyour quit coach can provide the patches and spray free of charge, that is awesome that you set a date to quit, now plan your quit, what are you going to do to remain smokefree once your quit date is apon you? Think about it, don't jump into it blindly, plan your quit, all the best

Way to go, susanm, in setting a quit date! That's amazing! There are so many great reasons to quit prior to a surgical procedure.
And being nervous is a common feeling when making a change. We are here to support you & lift you up, day by day.
    All the best,
    Sarah

Thank you all for replying. I talked to my kids and two of my grandkids so they all know I am quitting. I even took all my extra lighters to my son today.
I have the patch ready for me to use and stuff to keep my hands busy.

hello susanm so nice to meet you and congratulations on taking this huge step for your life.  that was an excellent step in preparing for your quit date to rid yourself of all of your lighters and have you also removed all of the ashtrays from your sight ??  i did that after my husband quit so seeing the ashtray wouldn't become a trigger for him.  he smoked through the first year of my quit but it never bothered me as i was very sure of the decision i made to give up cigarettes for the rest of my life.  it sounds like you are on the right track and i wish you well.  one other thing i did in my first days and months and yes even years was to come in here and read the posts such as they may be and post yourself often - if you are having a bad day come here and post.  if something great happened tell us too so we can celebrate with you.  i will be watching for you tomorrow on your first day and wish you nothing but the best.  i hope you have a great day

Thank you mdjsunshine! I don't smoke in the house so ashtrays inside are not a problem. The one I have outside will go in the garbage first thing in the morning so i know it has cooled down. I went out and got grapes to freeze today so I have something healthy to put in my mouth when the cravings hit. I have been reading some posts and telling everyone that I am quitting. Have a good evening.
