Hi. Have there been any medical or research studies about the cost-effectiveness of certain products over others? I am on a limited budget and would like the best BANG for my buck.

I had my last cigarettes on Saturday night 13 April. Same Saturday night I got the Life Brand Nicotine Lozenge stage 1 for $13 and Life Brand patch for $23 at shoppers drug Mart. On Sunday I tried the Lozenge and had 1 in the afternoon and one before I went to bed. It works for me because I only take it when I'm finding it hard to fight off my craving rather than taking it for the buzz alone. I used to smoke about 25-17 sticks a day and had quit in January cold turkey style but lasted 10 days. Through out yesterday (my first day of living smoke free) I only had two Lozenge and it has 24 in the bottle. Today I put the patch on and have not used the lozenges. I also noticed that even though the smell of cigarettes now bothers me but it doesn't trigger me to rush out and buy a cigarette to smoke as it did in the past when I went cold turkey. Secondly I won't try to celebrate, as in the past my way of celebrating living smoke free was to allow myself 1 and then I fall off the wagon. Please find cheap brands of NRT and no what works best for you. Try to hold off using them for a fix until you can't fight the urge. For me the Lozenge works best. I like the tinglish feeling of it on my tongue and I don't like the patch because it delivers nicotine in small does for 24hours. But the lozenges for 10-15 minutes till it dissolves. In addition the patch made me feel like I was high and I could hardly keep my eyes open

    Hi Triana,

I’m glad to hear that you are going to give quitting a try again.

Research show that the nicotine replacement therapies (patch, gum, lozenge, inhaler, Zyban or Champix) can double the chance of success for someone who smokes 10 or more cigarettes per day.

Of course, if you have any questions or financial concerns, you can call a Smokers’ Helpline Quit Coach at 1-877-513-5333 (toll-free).

My last cigarette was Wednesday night April 10. So far white-knuckling with the cold turkey method. I e had a couple of difficult moments but haven’t given in. I want to stay quit this time so purchased a nicotine spray for $44. from Shoppers as insurance. Has anyone tried the spray?

    Hi lee ryder

Awesome work on your quit - almost a week already.  And cold turkey too, simply amazing.

I too quit cold turkey (I guess that's the cheapest quit aid, lol), but I did also keep the spray around for those crazy moments.  I used the spray a couple times.  I guess you could say it worked a little too well, as I craved it as much as a cigarette.  I then realized that to be truly quit and free myself, I needed to rid all nicotine from my system.  And so I "white-knuckled" it as you say and didn't look back.  That was almost 14 months ago.

Keep the spray around, if only for the comfort of knowing it's there.  But I truly believe that cold turkey is the most effective method to a long-term quit.  With a firm mindset, it is possible.  Most of the long-term quitters on this forum did it cold turkey.

The important thing is that you hang on to your quit as if it is the most valuable thing in the world.  Invest in your quit daily, and never let it go.
