Two years of attempting to quit after taking up smoking at 40 .Im now in my early 50's I could never understand how people could be addicted to smoking and not just be to quit. Well, now I know!!! Day 3 for me and I feel like I lost my best friend. Really!! I'm emotional, fidgety, and doing my best to keep my usually easy come easy go nature.Whats been helping??? Keeping busy, reading, crocheting, cooking healthy meals....still the thought is there. What more can I do to replace this toxic relationship? The thought looking after my health, my intention to hit the pavement tomorrow and do 5km... Smokers Helpline....Any other ideas welcomed.

Hey, how you doing, my name is smitty, I have been quit now for almost 4 months, its getting pretty rough eh, I quit by using a combo tharapy of the patch and the spray, i planned my quit carefully, went to my doctor and he refured me to a quit coach, she supplied the patches and the spray for me free of charge, the only catch was that I follow the plan, I followed the plan and then I realized one day that its been 3 weeks since I last used a patch, the thing is adream01, what works for me, may not work for you, you have to figure out something that works for you, I would suggest that you go see your family doctor and see if you can get into a smoking cessation program, I am not saying that you cant do it cold turkey but you will stand a better chance if you get some help, all the best

    Hi adream01

Look, do not be so hard to you! all that you feel is part of the quit, part of the process to be free. That feeling of losings a best friend? is just your addiction talking to you! That was not your friend it was making you sick for many years. And for many years the Demon of tobacco was in your mind, taking your money and more from you.

So, is time for you to change for good! With all your Mind and Heart.

    Drink a lot water
    Distract yourself from the moment
Discus with someone confident about how you feel
    Deep briefing
    Go for a walk
    Do gardening
Look around and get busy doing something when you feel the crave

I am sure, that it will help you to get ready to fight the crave.

    You can do it!

Congrats in 3 Day's smoke free!

    Hi,

adream01, so glad to see you posting as what you are going through can be so overwhelming, it helps to just share! Day 3 especially can be the most intense of days in terms of withdrawal and cravings.

Exercise has been shown to help many quit and stay quit so hitting that pavement is right on track.
In fact, everything that you are doing is right on track. Keep on doing them! Maybe consider adding a treat, something special just for doing this?

You also have some great advice from brieffree and smitty, they are so knowledgeable about keeping a quit going...

Take what ideas appeal and work for you and just remember that it will get easier.

    One day at a time,
    Lillian

    Hi adream01,

Congratulations on your decision to quit and on reaching day 3. It sounds like you are doing the right things. I also found having a lot of absorbing projects and hobbies helped distract me. These included spending a lot of time grooming my yard and garden, housekeeping, long walks, reading many online articles about the ill effects of smoking, reading online newspapers and several more activities.

I also used nicotine lozenges and gum as my quit aid. Scotch mints instead also helped and I eventually weaned off the nicotine replacement therapy to the mints. I have now been happily smoke free for over four months and NRT free for several weeks. I set up a bucket list of rewards for reaching certain milestones in the quit.

Wishing you all the best with your quit.

DAY 4 !!!! Good Morning. I want to thank everyone Smitty, Eagerquit, Brieffiree, Lillian quit coach,  for your encouraging posts and recommendations  Smitty and Eagerquit huge congratulations! Thats awesome you both must be so proud and feel so much better. I ended doing 7km this morning have planned my day and it does not include my toxic so called friend lol.For back up I have the spray when I the urge is greater then my Willpower.  This has been a work in progress for me since my separation. I've gradually eliminated how much I smoked a day.  Till this week I decided this is it!! I'm in charge and have control of this. With the money I save I could get my nails done twice a week, Save that money trip south..... the possibilities are endless Have a wonderful day everyone and thank you again for your response its so appreciated.

    Congratulations to all of you!

There are many great ideas being shared here about what to do instead of smoking, as well as rewarding yourself!

adream01, Running and exercise are such an effective quit method, that we actually have an entire program dedicated to it called Run (or Walk) to Quit! If you are interested, please feel free to have a look at runtoquit.com.
